This is one of my favorite hikes that I have gone to. All 14 hikers had a very fun perfect day with such an awesome weather. I did not expect so much beauty on the trail.
Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area, a paradise tucked away in the San Bernardino mountains, is located in Hesperia, CA off the I-15 and 138 highway heading east. I wanted to do this hike mainly because I was curious what the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) looks like. That trail starts from the Mexico border all the way to the Canadian border in the west coast of the US. I heard, read, and saw in the movies about PCT.
I woke up at 3 am, made my breakfast and got ready, then left my home at 4:20 am. Picked up Dolores Grant at Angeles Crest Highway off the I-210. We all met at 14651 Cedar Cir, Hesperia, CA 92345. Saw Meredith Crane, Mike Torres, Letty Rios, Beatriz Ceballos, Melevy Osorio-Sorto, Irene, and the rest of the 3H family.
Most of the hike we did was on the northern part of Silverwood Lake and the PCT. The view was so pretty when the sun rises. We were greeted by early bugs but they weren’t a problem. We met some PCT hikers along the way. They’ve been hiking for weeks now. They are such awesome people trying to complete the task. 3H family handed them with 3H hats and took photos with them. Along the trail are some incredible views. We saw huge boulders that protects the dam and lovely vegetation.
Passed some dirt road bikers. And the surprise of them all is a long uphill battle to the top. I thought I was doing the Spartan race. 😀 We ate some snacks at the top and enjoyed the view of the lake. So, what comes up must come down. Again like the Spartan race, only there’s no mud, is a steep downward hike. Went through bushes and another slippery descent.
Saw those huge boulders again and joked about it going down. 3H wasn’t kidding, we are going down that path. 😀 Before that we took photos on top of rocks and danced to the beat of MJ’s Beat It. Thanks to Mike’s music contribution. 🙂
And off we go down the dam. It was exhilarating. Met more PCT hikers and trail clean-up crew. We thanked all of them.
We got back to the parking lot and had a surprise picnic lunch from the 3H family. We had granny apples, oranges, cucumbers, and corn and added them with hot spicy sprinkles and they really do taste better with it. Then we had shrimp soup mixed with nopales cactus, tomatoes, and chicken bouillon made by Dora paired with tortillas and it was so delicious. The vegetarians had avocados and tortillas.
We later head out to Heart Rock at Seeley Creek Falls as our bonus hike. The trail has a total of .49 mile. From the Silverwood Lake parking lot, it’s a 17 mile drive on the 138 highway. A short hike with awesome views. Lots of big boulders near the falls. I’m curious how that heart shaped rock was formed. Took a lot of photos.
As we say our hugs and goodbyes, we head back home. Thanks to Hiking for Health and Happiness -3H- for creating this event with Ricardo Cruz, Maglory Maza, Sergio Cruz, Dora Cruz, Jesus Carrillo, and Vivian Carrillo. I can’t wait what’s in store for next weekend’s hike. 🙂
